Introduction
The legal requirements for Ergonomic Risk Assessments
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) (Amendment)
Regulations 2001 (SI No. 188 of 2001), Regulation 19, requires employers to
ensure that:
"the working posture and position of employees while using work
equipment, and ergonomic requirements, are taken into account having regard to
the safety and health of the employees".
Thus, an employer is obliged to provide a safe place of work by incorporating
ergonomic considerations in the design and implementation of hand tools,
machinery, workplaces, personal protective equipment and work methods. Research
has shown that failure to address ergonomics in the working arrangements can
often lead to employees becoming physically fatigued and developing minor aches
and pains in joints and limbs, which could progress into more serious
musculo-skeletal problems.
What is an Ergonomic Risk Assessment?
The Safecon approach to this type of assessment involves:
- The assessor reviewing the
current work design and organisational factors in your workplace
- We provide solutions to a
healthier workstation layout and design, including monitor and document
placement, provide education on proper seating, posture, and movement.
- The assessor identifying
and recording any ergonomic equipment requirements and, where appropriate,
providing on-the-spot advice and assistance to attain optimum layout of
the workstations from computer workstations to machine set-up in a
production floor
- Environment assessment of
lighting, noise, temperature and humidity levels
- Safecon’s risk assessments include a comprehensive
report detailing findings and recommendations for solutions to remove
impediments and create a medically safe work environment.
- Where appropriate,
photographs will be included in the report to illustrate hazards.
